interdisciplinary research center to support basic research and

established in 1965 and supports teaching on Africa at the University

Studies was founded in 1962. It was one of the original African Studies

University of London's Centre of African Studies is the largest centre
of expertise on Africa outside Africa. Founded in 1965 at the School of
Oriental and African Studies, where its administration is still based,

research and discussion on Africa within the University; and promoting
a wider awareness of African issues.

department in the world to concentrate specifically on West Africa.
Despite its name CWAS is interested in the whole of Africa. Africa's
long history of relations with Europe, the African diaspora in the
Caribbean, and the continent's inextricable relationships with the
Islamic world are also integral aspects of CWAS's course programme.

SOAS is a college of the University of London and the only Higher
Education institution in the UK specialising in the study of Asia,
Africa and the Near and Middle East. Uniquely combining language
scholarship, disciplinary expertise and
regional focus, SOAS has the largest concentration in Europe of
academic staff concerned with Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
