SWAPO's new flagbearer offers Nujomaism without Nujoma at the helm

It was the result President Sam Nujoma wanted. The congress of the governing South West African People's Organisation on 28-29 May chose party Vice-President Hifikepunye Pohamba as its presidential candidate (AC Vol 45 No 10). Nujoma intervened at the last minute to discredit Pohamba's main challenger, Foreign Minister Hidipo Hamutenya, sacking him on the eve of the congress. Battles loom between the old guard and reformists. Hopes among party activists for policy shifts under a leader less beholden to SWAPO's national liberation past may be deferred but the closeness of the vote suggests they will not be abandoned....
