The local government elections bring change and hope for a calmer future

Burundi's politics have been transformed by the local government elections on 3 June. Firstly, they passed off peacefully, except in five communes of Bujumbura Rural Province, where the militant guerrillas of the Forces Nationales de Libération (FNL) tried to disrupt the voting. The overall turnout was above 70 per cent and the former rebels of the Conseil National pour la Défense de la Démocratie-Forces de la Défense de la Démocratie (CNDD-FDD) are set to win the parliamentary elections due on 4 July and the presidential poll in mid-August (AC Vol 45 No 20 & Vol 46 No 4). The two parties that won almost 93 per cent of the vote in the 1993 general elections have been swept away....
