The forced removals are dividing the country and President Mugabe's own party

According to Jonathan Moyo, the latest round of forced removals of slum-dwellers proves that President Robert Mugabe has been reading 'Stalin's economic textbook'. Moyo should know; he was Mugabe's propagandist for much of the past decade, until they split just before March's parliamentary elections. The political fallout has started and the chief casualty is Mugabe, as opposition grows outside and within his ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front. The 'war veterans', ZANU-PF's storm troopers, feel betrayed because the police targeted their homes, too.
