Although the United Republic of Tanzania has a population of 32 million people and the tiny islands of Zanzibar have only one million, the eyes and ears of most interested parties will be focused on Zanzibar when presidential and parliamentary elections take place on 30 October. This is because the governing Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM) is expected to win again comfortably on the mainland. In Zanzibar, however, there is now a widespread belief that for the first time since 1965, an opposition party, the Civic United Front (CUF), could win provided, that is, that the elections are free and fair....
