Revolt in the desert

As uranium, and maybe oil, raise hopes of income, northern Tuareg rebels have gone to war again

Niger’s latest rebellion is getting worse, although President Mamadou Tandja refuses to acknowledge its existence (AC Vol 48 Nos 8 & 18). The recently formed Mouvement des Nigériens pour la Justice (MNJ), which he calls ‘bandits’, is the latest Tuareg-led rebel group to demand a better deal for the country’s northern desert. The armed forces seem to have dug in for a long guerrilla war, unless Tandja can be persuaded otherwise.
