Under-resourced and under fire - and under investigation again

The government Commission reviewing up to 60 of Congo's mining contracts has quickly come under fire. Politicians, lobbyists and companies question its claims of objectivity, rigour and, indeed, the tight scheduling of its deliberations. They say the Commission lacks the resources and staff necessary to subject 60 complex legal contracts to serious scrutiny within the allotted three-month time frame. Now it looks unlikely to finish its work before December, after which it will be referred for further scrutiny to the Presidency. Companies claim that all this will disrupt investment plans and production. Congolese and foreign anti-corruption lobbyists fear that backdoor deals will be done and the Commission will rubber-stamp them....
