Judges misjudged

A close-run election and corruption allegations will give judicial appointments extra significance

As Kenya's presidential race speeds up, the contenders have their eyes on the legal system. For incumbent President Mwai Kibaki, this may be an additional insurance policy in a slow campaign. Judicial appointments could be crucial if next month's result is close; a narrow win for Kibaki would probably be challenged in court by his opponent, Raila Odinga, who would allege that the result was fixed.
