Breaking up the party

The latest attempt to replace the governing party has some impressive leaders but needs voters

It could be a new dawn in Namibia. In November, four years of factional fighting within the governing South West African People's Organisation culminated in a breakaway by senior party members marginalised and vilified by the former head of state and outgoing SWAPO President, Sam Nujoma. Former cabinet minister Jesaya Nyamu formed the Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) at the beginning of the month. Less than a week later, former Foreign Minister Hidipo Hamutenya resigned from SWAPO, casting a shadow over the party congress scheduled for 27-30 November.
