The governing African National Congress is preparing for all-out war between President Thabo Mbeki and his allies in government and Jacob Zuma, the ANC's newly elected President (AC Vol 49 No 1). Zuma's populist alliance, in total control of the party, includes the left-wing Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), the South African Communist Party (SACP) and the ANC Youth League. Mbeki and his centrist reformers refuse to concede an inch.
