On 13 February, Makoni launched his independent candidacy in the presidential election, due on 29 March, by describing Zimbabwe as 'a sad country full of fear' and calling on members of the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front to abandon 83-year-old President Robert Gabriel Mugabe and vote for a 'new beginning'. Makoni urged them: 'jump off the fence and climb out of your false comfort zone.'...
