Botswana President Ian Khama's open criticism of President Robert Mugabe's regime has provoked a stream of vitriol from Zimbabwe's state-controlled media. Mugabe's officials referred to Khama's government as a military junta (Khama formerly headed Botswana's small army), adding that Khama had been imposed on the Tswana without an election.
