As the crisis around Goma intensifies, conditions further north are deteriorating, opening up the possibility of more regional intervention. In the mineral-rich Orientale, Ugandan Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army has been attacking civilians in recent weeks. By the end of October, some 5,000 Congolese refugees had fled into the Yambio area of Western Equatoria, Southern Sudan, according to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees.
