Nouakchott is more dependent than ever on Arab donors

The ousting of civilian President Sidi Mohammed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi in a dawn putsch last August has prompted African, European and American sanctions against the new junta. The new leader, Gen. Mohamed Ould Abdelaziz, Commander of the Bataillon de la Sécurité Présidentielle (Basep), along with the Gendarmerie Nationale head, Gen. Félix Negri, and other senior officers in the eleven-strong junta, reject outside criticism and insist they need time to restore the country to constitutional rule.
