Demonstrators demand political reforms before the 2010 elections

Anti-regime demonstrators from both North and South Sudan first joined forces on the streets of Khartoum on 7 December to demand sweeping reforms before the elections scheduled for April 2010. It was the first opposition demonstration that the Khartoum regime had failed to stop since the National Islamic Front (NIF) seized power in June 1989. The prospect of national elections next year, followed by a referendum in the South on secession in 2011, with stasis in talks over Darfur and conflict reigniting in the east, mean the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) is entering a dangerous period....
