Britain’s Metropolitan Police have told Africa Confidential that they are confident they will secure the extradition of Nigeria’s former Delta State Governor James Ibori from Dubai, ‘by the end of the summer’. This follows the conviction of Ibori’s sister Christine Iborie-Ibie and his assistant, Udoamaka Onuigbo Okoronkwo, for money laundering on 7 June. They were both sentenced to five years in gaol. Another assistant of Ibori’s, Adebimpe Pogoson, had been previously acquitted. During sentencing at London’s Southwark Crown Court, the defence claimed Ibori was the prime culprit, who had pressured the defendants into laundering his ‘ill-gotten gains’. A description of Christine as ‘very far from [being Ibori’s] principal laundress’ drew smiles from the gallery.
