Political violence in the Niger Delta is escalating in the run-up to the April elections, threatening to plunge President Goodluck Jonathan’s power base into chaos again and compromising both oil production and public safety. The long shadows of assassination and intimidation have extended to Ogoni in Rivers State. This is affecting the governing People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and opposition parties, which now have a fighting chance in some Delta states. The fear is that if violence is already so bad in Rivers, it will soon get worse everywhere....
