Chivukuvuku’s first steps as an independent politician have faltered. He tried to recruit Savimbi’s former economics spokesperson, Fatima Roque, who is white and married to Portuguese tycoon Horacio Roque. Some of her rich right-wing Portuguese friends have fallen out with Savimbi and could afford to finance an alternative opposition leader; after expressing views which Savimbi disapproved of in several interviews, she lost her party job. But Roque has also turned down Chivukuvuku’s approach....
