Rioting over power cuts and bids to change the constitution had already hurt President Abdoulaye Wade and his son Karim politically and now they seem also to have lost the confidence of the powerful Françafrique network of Francophone African leaders and top French politicians and business executives. During the rioting on 27 June, Karim Wade, fearing a revolution, telephoned the uncrowned king of Françafrique, the lawyer Robert Bourgi, pleading for French military intervention (AC Vol 52 No 13).
