Irritating Western powers is an enduring spectator sport in Africa as the continuing interest in Colonel Moammar el Gadaffi shows (AC Vol 42 No 11). Addressing several hundred activists and students in a tent outside the Libyan People's Bureau (Embassy) in Zambia, on 10 July, during the Organisation of African Unity summit (see Feature), El Gadaffi said the United States and Europe were behind the wars in Congo-Kinshasa, Liberia and Sierra Leone. He also questioned the commitment of some of his fellow African leaders to continental unity, a view shared by many in the audience. Wherever Col. Gadaffi and his 50-strong entourage went in Lusaka, they were greeted by welcoming banners....
