TAZARA troubles

China’s flagship African railroad project continues to lose money, and Chinese management may be brought in to avoid throwing more good money after bad. Built in the 1970s, the Tanzania-Zambia Railway was China’s most expensive foreign aid project and a means to break Zambia’s dependence on trade with Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) and South Africa. Harking back to an age where politics trumped economics, Beijing is still paying for its decision.
