Policymakers face rising expectations and criticisms of Beijing’s trade and investments in Africa

Growing demand for Africa’s minerals, oil, gas and farmland will shape China’s next five-year plan (2011-2015) due to be approved in March 2011. The planning committees have to take into account both the rising expectations of Beijing’s role as a project financier and builder of infrastructure and criticisms of Chinese companies’ operations on the ground there. This follows a Chinese manager shooting protesting miners in Zambia (AAC Vol 3 No 12) along with complaints about the numbers of Chinese workers in Africa.
