Big plans, small city-state

Singapore is widening its net in Africa. The city-state’s trade with sub-Saharan Africa reached US$8.4 billion in 2009 and it punches above its weight in financial terms. Geographically smaller than either Mauritius or São Tomé e Príncipe, Singapore boasts a national income which exceeds that of Egypt and Nigeria.Yet in a country noted for its efficiency and business-friendly environment, even a business council devoted to strengthening Singapore-Africa trade has difficulty putting its plans into action.
