A friend in need

With most of Sudan’s known oil reserves now belonging to the South Sudan government in Juba, the Sudanese government needs China even more. For Beijing, though, Khartoum may now be a less meaningful ally. Nonetheless, Khartoum hopes to maintain the traditional friendship by giving Chinese state-owned oil companies a competitive edge over their rivals. High-level visits continued after President Omer Hassan Ahmed el Beshir’s July trip to Beijing. In a bout of dual-track diplomacy, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi visited both Khartoum and Juba in early August.
