Harare in the sky with diamonds

The government is working on a diamond-backed deal to buy new aeroplanes as the Kimberley Process allows the country to export gems again

The Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) government has tried to disguise its plan for China Sonangol to finance new airplanes for Air Zimbabwe. The joint venture between the China International Fund and Angolan state oil company is due to purchase two planes as part of its multibillion dollar deal with the Harare government signed in late 2009 (AAC Vol 3 No 1, China Sonangol targets Harare's gold and oil). Another opaque business deal has divided the rival parties in Zimbabwe’s government of national unity.
