Malabo imbroglio

The failed plot to oust President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo swings wildly from farce to tragedy. The arrest of some 65 foreign soldiers (and the seizure of their Boeing 727 jet) at Harare Airport on 7 March, followed by the arrest of a further 15 in Bioko on 8 March, has prompted conflicting explanations. Information Minister Agustín Nze Nfumu claims the plot was financed by London-based businessman Ely Calil, a friend and backer of exiled opposition leader Severo Moto Nsa. Nfumu called Calil the 'Godfather of Severo Moto'. Both Calil and Moto deny plotting and dismiss the whole affair as a set-up.
