King Mohammed VI has woken up to the realisation that Morocco's campaign to impose its sovereignty over Western Sahara has entered a dangerous new phase. For three decades, the former Spanish Sahara has been the critical issue unifying Moroccan opinion. However, with the Polisario Front liberation movement apparently closer than ever to independence, loss of the territory would have a very major impact on Mohammed's survival prospects.
