Politicians undermine new peace deal

Last­-minute manoeuvres by both sides are sabotaging the chances of ending the war as international pressure mounts

The Juba government has used a split in the rebel movement to announce that it is pulling out of the peace talks in Addis Ababa, which were officially scheduled to end – in agreement – on 17 August. In spite of the threat of United­ States' backed sanctions against the two main protagonists, the prospects of a conclusive end to South Sudan’s civil war look remote. Indeed, many in South Sudan see the sanctions as counter­-productive.
