The campaign gaol trail

Former Prime Minister Hama Amadou, in custody since November charged with child-trafficking, is set to contest the presidential election from his cell after being denied bail on appeal. Arrested on his return from exile in France, Amadou is one of 15 candidates challenging President Mahamadou Issoufou. The authorities say he is ineligible for bail because his lawyers are still contesting procedural matters but most see this as a way of keeping Issoufou's strongest opponent out of action.
