The state of emergency in Plateau escalates the President's confrontation with state governors

President Olusegun Obasanjo's suspension of Plateau State Governor Joshua Ariye and the State House of Assembly points to a growing constitutional crisis. As investigations continue into Dariye's personal finances, his political future looks precarious. So, too, are the prospects of the newly appointed administrator, General Mohammed Chris Alli, of quickly ending the bitter communal clashes in the State. Many Nigerians believe that similar measures are to be taken against two other State Governors, James Ibori in Delta and Ibrahim Shekaru in Kano, who are also presiding over crisis-ridden state governments.
