Amisom struggles

A funding gap and a string of defeats head a long list of problems for the African alliance fighting Islamist militants

The health of the African Union Mission in Somalia is still in question after the leaders of the troop-contributing countries ended a crucial summit on its financing and its future in Djibouti on 29 February. A series of devastating attacks on Amisom by Al Haraka al Shabaab al Mujahideen have claimed hundreds of lives and made it clear the Islamist militia's defeat is not 'just around the corner', as persistently claimed by Amisom officials and Kenyan generals in particular.
