Two bye-elections on 7 March were make-or-break events for two big political leaders: Raila Amolo Odinga of the opposition Coalition for Reform and Democracy and Deputy President William Samoei arap Ruto of the Jubilee Alliance Party. CORD fought off a strong Jubilee challenge for the vacant National Assembly seat in Malindi on the Coast. Meanwhile Ruto's forces prevailed in the battle for the Senate seat at Kericho, Rift Valley, where Gideon Moi, son of ex-President Daniel arap Moi, made his first major bid to replace Ruto as spokesperson for the Kalenjin peoples.
