ANC cries 'mayday'

Talk of a new trades union federation is closer than than ever to reality, Africa Confidential has learned. The country's largest union, the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA), and the National Council of Trade Unions are, AC understands, about to form a new grouping together with the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU). Former General Secretary of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), Zwelinzima Vavi, and NUMSA's Irvin Jim have also, we hear, been holding talks with Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema.
