No compromise, no bail

General Jean-Marie Michel Mokoko's appeal for bail over a charge of 'endangering the internal security of the state' was rejected by a Brazzaville court on 18 August. Mokoko was President Denis Sassou-Nguesso's army chief of staff until the early 1990s and a military advisor until last February. But he became disaffected and stood against his old boss in March's presidential election. Mokoko's presidential campaign then met with clearly officially-sanctioned media smears and coup allegations, but it was only in June that he was detained on the security charge.
