Funeral fusillade hits Zuma

Senior ANC figures use a commemoration for a party veteran to launch their campaign to force the President to step down

The funerals of veteran African National Congress leaders have become informal hustings where ANC and South African Communist Party (SACP) leaders can vent their anger about Jacob Zuma's presidency. The 25 August funeral of former cabinet minister Makhenkesi Arnold Stofile at Fort Hare University in the Eastern Cape became a dramatic showcase for the anti-Zuma faction. The former Director General of Foreign Affairs and active ANC member Sipho Pityana told the 10,000-strong crowd that if Zuma had been there, he would have told him to resign. He started in English and then switched to Xhosa to say the word 'resign'.
