Post mortem

When the Lusaka High Court 'provisionally' closed independent newspaper and website The Post on 2 November, its Editor and owner, Fred M'membe, told his confidants, 'It's time to move on; you can't fight endlessly.' Nevertheless, he is believed to be the force behind The Mast, a new newspaper which closely resembles The Post. Judge Sunday Nkonde, whom M'membe considers an enemy of long standing, placed The Post in liquidation after hearing a petition from five former Post employees. They had resigned from the paper demanding 785,000 kwacha (US$80,000) in unpaid fees and asked the judge to wind up its operations. The five have since found employment in the public sector.
