Reforms to the European Union's controversial Common Agricultural Policy adopted in Luxembourg on 26 June have met a mixed reception in Africa. While subsidising European farmers is unpopular, and North Africans who must compete with southern European producers complain they are frozen out of lucrative EU markets, dismantling the price support regime is bad news in many areas for African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) producers who enjoy preferential treatment from the EU.
