We were sad to hear of the death on 18 August of Wayne Fredericks, a member of Africa Confidential's editorial board, aged 87. Wayne was one of the last survivors of a remarkable generation of Americans for whom public service was a noble calling, whose modesty belied their courage, and whose courtesy was exemplary. By the end of his distinguished career, Wayne had become a quintessentially US figure: a facilitator and fixer, a friend to the rank and file and the famous, and a fount of advice to anyone who sought his counsel.
