Egypt is in the throes of a nationalist backlash, a reaction to claims in the Western media, particularly in the United States, that the co-pilot of the airliner which crashed on 31 October may have committed suicide. The vast majority of Egyptians seem to find it inconceivable that anyone taking his or her own life would take those of 216 other people too. Ministers have stood up to suggest a US conspiracy to protect aircraft manufacturers Boeing.
