While accelerating its military build up in Darfur, the National Islamic Front government signed a peace deal on 7 January with the mysterious new rebel group, the National Movement for Reform and Development. The first noticeable action of the NMRD last year was to try to draw the powerful Rizeigat tribe into the conflict (AC Vol 45 No 23), a move which Rizeigat sources attributed to the regime.
