Efforts by South Africa's Harmony to create the world's biggest gold mining group by taking over another SA mining house, Gold Fields, hit new problems this week with Harmony's admission that it had incorrectly classified 8.3 million ounces of gold as reserves with the capital market authorities in Johannesburg (AC Vol 45 No 23).
