Welcome to the world

Liberia re-entered the international system on 16 September after two decades of lawlessness. At a grand signing ceremony in the United Nations Headquarters in New York, the Chairman of the National Transitional Government of Liberia, Charles Gyude Bryant, committed his country to 103 international treaties, some dating back to the founding of the League of Nations in 1921; 83 will come into force immediately, a further 20 will be ratified within a year as technical conditions are fulfilled. They cover everything from maritime law and drug smuggling to human rights and obscene publications.
