Members of parliament are angry because the Chairman of the National Transitional Government of Liberia, Gyude Bryant, has refused to sign a bill allowing them to keep their government cars. One of the first acts of the all-party government formed under the 2003 Accra peace agreement was to spend millions of dollars on shiny new four-wheel-drive vehicles, at the official price of US$37,000 each. Bouncing over Monrovia's potholed, rubbish-strewn streets, they prompted much resentment. Protests - and a threatened halt to foreign aid - were averted only after Bryant promised the vehicles would remain government property.
