The Niger Delta still simmers a decade after the execution of its leading campaigner

The legacy of writer-campaigner Ken Saro-Wiwa a decade after his execution is secure. Saro-Wiwa put the worsening political and environmental crisis of the Niger Delta, the country's key oil-producing area, at the centre of national politics and it has stayed there. The Delta crisis is worse now than it was in 1995: more violence, more and better-armed criminal gangs and militias, and more corruption in the procurement and marketing of oil and gas. Unemployment and destitution there remain among the highest in Nigeria.
