A new party of old-style politicians opposes a third term for President Obasanjo

Northern Nigeria's political elite flocked to Abuja on 20 April to launch the Advanced Congress of Democrats (ACD), which aims to block a constitutional change allowing President Olusegun Obasanjo to stand for a third term. The event was held at the Shehu Musa Yar'Adua centre, named after the late General who was deputy leader of Obasanjo's military regime from 1976-79. Yar'Adua's friend and business associate, Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, has inherited his political network and is implacably opposed to Obasanjo's continued rule.
