Jacob Zuma has won more points in his battle for the presidential succession

Jacob Zuma's supporters claim that a battle of ideas and loyalties is gripping the African National Congress. On his side are the populists, while President Thabo Mbeki leads the pragmatists. Zuma has most trades unions and South African Communist Party (SACP) members; Mbeki keeps much of the party hierarchy and most other ANC constituencies. However activists unwilling to align with either side are on the increase, prompting some to believe a 'bridging candidate' will eventually emerge, with support from both camps.
