The President's inaction keeps Cameroon peaceful, but far from
prosperous
President Paul Biya, an expert at staying in power, has presided over two decades of economic and social disaster. Many think him the main obstacle to political and economic reform in Cameroon, but he faces no serious threat from rivals within the ruling Cameroon People's Democratic Movement/Rassemblement Démocratique du Peuple Camerounais (CPDM) or the Anglophone opposition. Biya, at 73, is surrounded by a coterie of similarly veteran ministers and advisers, facing an opposition leader, Ni John Fru Ndi (65), who has lost the dynamism that once made his Social Democratic Front (SDF) a serious force.
