Union leader turned tycoon Cyril Ramaphosa has discreetly informed senior members of the Congress of South African Trade Unions that he is prepared to be a candidate for the presidency of the African National Congress at its national conference in December. Ramaphosa is proceeding cautiously mindful of the ANC tradition that candidates do not announce themselves but emerge from the party, almost like Popes.
