Ethiopia is withdrawing its troops but the transitional government is yet to start serious reconciliation efforts

The Ugandan troops who have arrived in Mogadishu did little to stop the shooting. There were 1,300 of them, the first contingent of the African Union Mission to Somalia (Amisom), and they were greeted by mortar and small-arms fire. The next planned arrivals are 1,700 troops from Burundi and a Nigerian battalion, with others later from Ghana and possibly Malawi. The aim is to assemble 8,000 soldiers, but African governments have not yet offered enough and nobody knows who will pay for them.
