Is Gato going?

General Paulo Lukamba Gato's announcement that he will not seek nomination as presidential candidate for the União Nacional para a Independência Total de Angola is at odds with recent history. Gato took over as acting leader of UNITA almost immediately after its founding leader, Jonas Savimbi, was shot dead in February 2002 (AC Vol 43 No 5). Savimbi's deputy, António Dembo, died a few weeks later in unexplained circumstances.
